Topic of the month: the European expansion of insurance brokers

Brokers are going European at a markedly faster pace, driven by several forces at once: regulatory pressure, the hunt for growth and market consolidation. Thanks to the European passport that comes with the IDD (Insurance Distribution Directive), brokers can now operate across several countries far more easily.

This opening is fuelling the rise of pan-European platforms, often backed by investment funds, that buy up local firms to win market share quickly.

But going European also brings its own challenges: harmonising practices, handling local regulatory differences, integrating IT systems and staying close to clients. Independent brokers therefore have to choose between staying local and joining larger networks. Over time, the market should keep consolidating around a handful of large groups able to operate at European scale, while still leaving room for highly niche specialists.

3 insurance stories from March 2026

Strategic moves: wholesale brokers are swallowing up local brokerage

The leading wholesale brokers (April, Entoria, SPVIE) are stepping up acquisitions of regional firms and local portfolios. This is no longer just external growth: it’s a deep shift in France’s distribution model.

🔎 How to read it:

  • A vertically integrated model: wholesalers no longer want to be mere product designers. By buying local brokers, they lock in their own distribution network and capture the entire value chain (design commission + brokerage commission).
  • The answer to the “demographic wall”: with more than 50% of local brokers nearing retirement, wholesalers are using their financial muscle to keep those portfolios from scattering or ending up with bancassurers.

🔎 Key takeaway: French brokerage is polarising. The gradual disappearance of the “small independent broker” in favour of integrated networks run by wholesalers is completely redrawing the balance of power with insurance carriers.

Insurtech Insights 2026: AI moves from experimentation to industrialisation

Europe’s big insurtech gathering confirmed a major turning point for the industry this March. On 18 and 19 March in London, Insurtech Insights Europe brought together more than 6,000 insurance professionals, and the message was unambiguous: the AI experimentation phase is over. 50% of the 150 talks were about AI and agentic AI, and 42% of the 130 tech exhibitors are positioning themselves in that space.

Concrete impact

👉 For brokers: AI is becoming a direct productivity lever across policy administration, underwriting and client relationships, but it calls for real organisational change, not just a new tool.

🔎 Key takeaway: AI is no longer an innovation topic; it’s now an execution topic.

Panorama Assurtech 2026: the numbers behind a sector picking up speed

On 25 March, the Observatoire de la Fintech presented its study “L’Année de l’Assurtech 2026” (The Year of Insurtech 2026) at the Village by CA to 200 decision-makers. Four panel discussions unpacked concrete applications of AI in underwriting, health, prudential risk and claims management.

🔎 How to read it:

  • Underwriters spend only 30% of their time actually underwriting: that figure alone shows how much room AI has to optimise insurance jobs.
  • Value no longer lies in the data itself, but in how it’s connected and governed: a direct warning to players who store data without putting it to work.

Other news at a glance

  • 🤝 Equity stake: Kylian Mbappé becomes a minority shareholder in Alan through his fund Coalition Capital (announced on 23 March at the Musée du Quai Branly).
  • 📣 Appointment: Emmanuelle Assouan takes the helm of the ACPR (France’s insurance and banking supervisor), succeeding Nathalie Aufauvre in a post that is strategic for the whole industry.
  • 🏅 Awards: the Talents de l’Assurance 2026 ceremony drew 920 applications across 11 categories, with brokerage particularly well represented.
